The Wythe House
History combined with luxury for a distinctive stay
The Wythe House in Williamsburg, Virginia belonged to George Wythe (pronounced “with”), a leader of the patriot movement in Virginia, a delegate to the Continental Congress, and Virginia’s first signer of the Declaration of Independence. The house also served as General George Washington’s headquarters just before the British siege of Yorktown, and French General Rochambeau made the home his headquarters after victory at Yorktown. In 1776, the house accommodated Virginia General Assembly delegate Thomas Jefferson and his family.

A Historic Cottage adjacent to the Wythe House Mansion
This adorable cottage was built as a copy of the Wythe House’s kitchen. Due to the threat of fire the kitchens were detached in colonial great houses. Normally they were separated by 30-40 feet. This also kept heat from the kitchen away from the main house which was important in the summer. The originator of the estate and village, Mr. Thomas Jones once had colonial cooking sessions here with his friends.
Fully renovated two-story cottage with two bedrooms and a bath upstairs. Both have views of the formal gardens and the pristine woodlands.
On the ground floor sitting room are two massive 17th century cooking fireplaces for the use of guests. Herringbone brick flooring line the main floor. While the kitchens of less wealthy homes had plank floors, those built by the elite were brick. You might even opt for an authentic colonial cooking lesson by our private chef.
